What to Focus on in Your Baby's First Year
By Dr. Aanya Kapoor, Child Development Advisor
The first year brings a lot of advice, noise, and comparison. The goal is not to "do everything."
The goal is to notice patterns, support development, and enjoy the journey.
0-3 Months
- Build connection: eye contact, voice, touch.
- Prioritize tummy time in short bursts.
- Track feeding, sleep, and soothing patterns.
4-6 Months
- Encourage reaching and grasping.
- Introduce playful turn-taking.
- Watch for rolling and stronger head control.
7-9 Months
- Create safe floor time for movement.
- Use naming games: people, objects, routines.
- Support early problem solving through play.
10-12 Months
- Notice attempts to stand and cruise.
- Encourage gestures and first words.
- Celebrate small gains instead of comparing timelines.
Every child develops at a unique pace. If something feels off, bring observations to your pediatrician early.
